Local SEO in Pakistan: Google Business Profile, Maps and Roman Urdu Searches
How Pakistani businesses get found on Google Maps and in AI answers: setting up a Business Profile properly, matching how people search in English, Urdu and Roman Urdu, earning reviews, city pages and listings beyond Google.
Profile → reviews → pagesFIG.01
Short answer
Local SEO in Pakistan starts with a verified Google Business Profile in the right category, using the same name, address and phone number as your website. After that, what moves a business up the map is a steady flow of genuine reviews, a website page for each city or area you really serve, and content that matches how people search, often in Roman Urdu as well as English.
Key takeaways
- Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence. You control relevance and prominence.
- The primary category is the most important single choice on a Business Profile.
- Adding keywords to your business name breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.
- Reviews are the part most Pakistani businesses neglect, and the part that separates the top three on the map.
- List the business on Bing Places and Apple Business Connect too. AI assistants and iPhone maps read them.
When someone in Karachi searches "school management software" or someone in Lahore searches "ac repair near me", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any ordinary result. Those three get most of the calls. In our experience, most small and mid-sized businesses in Pakistan either have no Business Profile, have one created years ago by someone who has since left, or have one with the pin in the wrong building.
Fixing that is one of the cheapest marketing jobs a local business can do. This guide covers how map rankings work, how to set up a profile properly, how Pakistanis actually search, how to get reviews, what your website needs, and how all of this feeds the AI answers that are starting to appear for local questions.
What decides who appears on the map
Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance, meaning how well your profile matches the search; distance, meaning how far you are from the searcher or the place named in the search; and prominence, meaning how well known and well reviewed you are. You cannot move your office closer to every customer, so the work goes into the other two.
| Factor | What it means | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches the search | Category, services, description, website content |
| Distance | How close you are to the searcher or named area | Very little: an accurate pin and correct address |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted you are | Reviews, ratings, links, mentions, listings elsewhere |
Setting up a Google Business Profile properly
Setting up a Business Profile in Pakistan
Claim or create the profile
Search for your business on Google Maps first. If a profile already exists, claim it rather than creating a duplicate.
Choose the primary category carefully
Pick the most specific category that describes your main business, such as "Software company" rather than "Company". Add a few secondary categories only if they are true.
Use your real name only
Write the business name exactly as it appears on your signboard and documents. Do not add city names or keywords. It breaks Google's guidelines and is a common reason for suspension.
Place the pin precisely
In dense areas such as plazas, markets and multi-storey complexes, drag the pin onto your actual building and add the floor or office number to the address.
Decide whether to show the address
If customers visit you, show it. If you go to them, as a plumber or caterer does, hide the address and set a service area instead.
Complete verification
Google often asks for a video showing your signboard, the street and proof that you run the business. Methods vary, so follow the instructions on screen and keep your signage visible.
Fill in everything
Hours, phone, website, services with short descriptions, products where relevant, and real photos of the office, team and work. Add a new photo or update every month.
How Pakistan searches: English, Urdu and Roman Urdu
Most searches for businesses and services in Pakistan are typed in English, but many mix in Roman Urdu, which is Urdu written in Latin letters, especially conversational ones. Voice search adds Urdu script to the mix. Area names also have several spellings. A page that only uses formal English terms misses some of the ways real customers phrase their search.
| What people type | What they want | What your page should include |
|---|---|---|
| school software price | A cost range | A clear starting price or range, and what changes it |
| best caterer in gulshan | A local recommendation | The areas you serve by name, with reviews |
| laptop repair kahan hoti hai saddar | A nearby shop | Address, landmark, opening hours, map |
| dha phase 6 / defence phase 6 | The same area, two names | Both names where it reads naturally |
| online store banwana hai | A service provider | A plain explanation of the service and how to start |
Do not stuff pages with Roman Urdu. Instead, answer common questions in your FAQs using the words customers really use, write area names the way locals write them, and keep your Business Profile description natural. Google understands a lot of Roman Urdu, but it still has to see that your page is about what the person typed.
Reviews: the part most businesses skip
Across Pakistani cities, the businesses at the top of the map usually have more recent reviews than the ones below them. Most businesses never ask. Customers are happy to leave a review if you make it easy and ask at the right moment.
- Copy your direct review link from the Business Profile and send it on WhatsApp right after a job is finished or an order is delivered.
- Ask every satisfied customer, not just a few, so reviews arrive steadily rather than in one burst.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically. Future customers read the replies.
- Reviews in Urdu or Roman Urdu are fine. They read as genuine because they are.
- Never buy reviews or post them yourself. Google removes them, can restrict the profile, and customers recognise them.
Your website still matters
The Business Profile links to your website, and Google uses the site to decide how relevant you are. A strong local website for a Pakistani business has the same name, address and phone number as the profile in the footer of every page, loads quickly on a mid-range phone on mobile data, and makes WhatsApp the easy way to get in touch.
- Create a page for each city or area only where you genuinely serve it and have something specific to say: clients there, local delivery details, an office or regular visits. Pages that just swap the city name are treated as doorway pages and can hurt you. Our Lahore and Islamabad pages show what a real city page covers.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data with the same details as the profile.
- Put prices or price ranges on the site where you can. Price is one of the first things people search for, and AI answers quote it.
- Track WhatsApp clicks and calls as conversions, so you know which pages bring enquiries.
Showing up in AI answers for local searches
Google now shows AI Overviews for many local questions, and more people ask ChatGPT or Gemini things like "best software house in Lahore for an ERP". These answers draw on the same signals: Business Profile details, reviews, directory listings and articles that compare local businesses. Two further steps help.
- List the business on Bing Places for Business. Microsoft Copilot and other assistants draw on Bing's data. Bing Places can import your details directly from your Google Business Profile, so it takes minutes.
- Claim Apple Business Connect. It controls how you appear in Apple Maps and Siri on iPhones, which are widely used by business buyers.
- Be on the lists people check. Industry directories, your chamber of commerce, such as KCCI in Karachi or LCCI in Lahore, trade associations, and genuine "best of" articles about your city and field.

A monthly routine
- Add two or three new photos to the Business Profile and post one update or offer.
- Send the review link to every customer served that month, and reply to every new review.
- Check the profile for edits suggested by other users, which can quietly change your hours, phone or category.
- Answer any questions posted on the profile.
- Check Search Console for the local searches you appear in, and add answers to the website for any new questions you see.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rank on Google Maps in Pakistan?
A complete, verified profile can start appearing for nearby searches within a few weeks. Reaching the top three in a competitive area usually takes several months of steady reviews and updates.
Can I rank on the map in a city where I have no office?
Map results need a real address or a genuine service area. You cannot appear in the Lahore map results from a Karachi office, but a website page about your work in Lahore can still rank in the normal results below the map.
Should each branch have its own Business Profile?
Yes. Every branch with its own address, staff and opening hours should have its own profile and its own page on your website.
Is it allowed to add keywords to my business name on Google?
No. Google's guidelines say the name must match your real-world business name. Adding keywords or a city can lead to the profile being suspended.
